Cummings’ widow to run for his congressional seat (ASL – 11.12.19)

Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, the widow of Congressman Elijah Cummings, is planning to run for her husband’s seat in Congress.

Cummings died in mid-October at the age of 68 and represented Maryland’s 7th District.

Rockeymoore Cummings currently serves as the chairwoman of the Maryland Democratic Party.

She told the Baltimore Sun that she wants to carry her husband’s legacy forward while also building a legacy of her own.

Rockeymoore Cummings plans to focus on healthcare, education and protecting social security programs.

On Friday she is scheduled to have a preventative double mastectomy and says she will start campaigning two-to-four weeks after recovering.

In 2015 her mother died of breast cancer and last year her sister was diagnosed with it.
