44 DEAF FAMILIES & 5TH DEAF GENERATIONS LIVE IN THE DEAF VILLAGE

Travel The World
Near Singaraja, Bali, Indonesia is the “Deaf Village” Bengkala. That’s where 44 Deaf families live at. It’s the village where both hearing and deaf treat each other equally. The best part is, they all communicate in either sign language or gesture.

Villagers developed their own sign language, which has been passed on for centuries. I learned that it was caused by centric recessive gene DFNB3, current in the village for over 7 Deaf generations. Hearing families may have a deaf kid, and the other deaf parents have hearing kids who can hear perfectly well. The point is, either way makes no difference to the villagers. There is no kind of discrimination at that village

Some villagers see their deafness as an unique, as a gift from their god, Kewa Kolok, the god of the Deaf.
