Millions of protesters marched in Sao Paulo, Brazil, outraged over lack of government action in stopping the Amazon rain forest fires.

World leaders, environmentalists and people around the world are calling the inferno a global disaster.

Major antigovernment protests broke out on Friday in Sao Paulo and other cities as Brazilians call on the government to protect the Amazon.

Under international pressure, Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro said on Friday that he plans to deploy the Army to tackle the wildfires.

The Amazon is the largest tropical rain forest in the world and accounts for at least 10 percent of the planet’s biodiversity.

The rain forest also produces about 20 percent of the world’s oxygen and is often called the planet’s lungs.

Brazil’s space research Center INPE said this week that the country has seen an 85 percent increase in fires this year and more than half were in the Amazon region, spelling disaster for the local environment and ecology.
