Confusing Signs in ASL: Open B Handshape

ASL Lessons
In this video we’ll be practicing signs that look similar. Can you spot the difference between these 8 signs? ****** Download the practice worksheet for free here: bit.ly/asl-library

These are commonly confused signs. Remember, each sign has 5 parameters (handshape, palm orientation, location, movement, and non-manual markers). Just changing one of those parameters makes it a different sign. Each of these signs are so similar they’re just ONE parameter change away from one another. If someone is signing to you and you can’t remember the difference, it’ll make the conversation quite difficult. Practice spotting the difference and identify each of the parameters for each sign to really get it to stick in your memory.

About This Video:
In this video lesson Rochelle Barlow show you the difference between similar signs. Often many signs are so similar, that there’s just one parameter (of the 5 possible (that are different). This can make it confusing when people are signing quickly and you can’t decipher if it’s this sign or that sign. Watch to learn the difference between the ASL signs for ‘take off’ vs ‘run’, ‘school’ vs ‘paper’, ‘nice’ vs ‘clean’, and ‘arrive’ vs ‘proof’; and for more receptive practice and signing practice.
